Noor is currently working as a content writer and digital marketer.<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Are Buyer Personas?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buyer personas, also known as marketing personas, can be defined as a general profile of your typical (or ideal) consumer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buyer personas are based on real data collected through market research or extracted from a customer database, for example, CRM (Customer Relationship\u00a0 Management) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.google.com\/analytics\/web\/provision\/#\/provision\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Analytics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In simple words, personas combine research-based data and educated guesses about your clients.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the three major types of business personas (user persona, buyer persona, and website persona), a buyer persona is the most popular. Its popularity stems from the fact that it helps marketers empathize with the customer and see them as more than cold data.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we will explain the step-by-step process to create buyer personas using HubSpot\u2019s \u2018Make my Persona\u2019 tool. We\u2019ll also discuss buyer personas in more detail and why they\u2019re important in devising an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hubspot.com\/acp\/creating-inbound-strategy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inbound strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is HubSpot&#8217;s \u2018Make My Persona\u2019 Tool?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hubspot\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hubspot.com\/make-my-persona?persona=-M6Ulqotutzp8_x8G6Ln%5C\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make My Persona tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> creates a profile of your potential or current buyer personas with the data you provide. To collect the data, the tool asks simple questions like names, age, education, etc, and generates a buyer persona, which is kind of a \u201cCV\u201d that represents your ideal customer segment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating a persona manually, i.e., on paper or using graphics tools like Adobe Photoshop can be a long and tedious process. With the HubSpot persona tool, <\/span><b>you can create your buyer personas within minutes.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Does Creating a Buyer Persona Help My Business?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buyer personas help you understand your existing customers and prospective customers. It\u2019s more than acquiring new customers or devising a marketing strategy. The questionnaire is ready-made and includes almost everything you need to create your buyer persona.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To demonstrate the process of creating buyer personas with the HubSpot persona tool, I\u2019ll create a buyer persona for the purpose of marketing a new project management software. The software is designed to help software companies organize the day-to-day activities of their employees and keep track of their day-to-day tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before Creating The Buyer Persona<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating a persona is easy but you need data to do that. Without authentic data, your buyer persona will not match the ideal buyer. Remember, <\/span><b>your persona is only as good as your data.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For my buyer persona, <strong>Arya<\/strong>, I used multiple sources to collect data:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media platforms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forums like Quora\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YouTube videos<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interviews and discussions\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The interview and discussions basically helped me separate facts from theory. I strongly recommend interacting with current or potential clients. Even if you can\u2019t conduct interviews or don&#8217;t have time for discussions, at least discuss the persona with your team. Getting a second opinion can be truly insightful for your buyer persona.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Collect Information About Your Buyers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establishing a basic picture of your buyer is a necessary step for persona creation. You won\u2019t have to go through tons of data for this, but some efforts are needed. Once you know the target audience, further information can be collected through means such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interviews<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online forms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surveys<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brainstorming sessions with your team members\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have the information, then follow these <\/span><b>seven easy steps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and your buyer persona will be ready in less than 10 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give your buyer a <\/span><b>name <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a <\/span><b>face<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define their <\/span><b>age <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>educational qualification<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define the <\/span><b>industry <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the buyer persona and the <\/span><b>size of their organization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define the <\/span><b>job title<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your buyer persona, and <\/span><b>what they deliver<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define the <\/span><b>job responsibilities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your buyer and challenges along with their goals and objectives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define the <\/span><b>tools <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>platforms <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your buyer persona uses on a daily basis.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define the<\/span><b> social habits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your buyer and the <\/span><b>platforms <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they use to gain information.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll discuss each point in detail (with screenshots) and explain why they\u2019re important in creating buyer personas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Access the HubSpot Persona Tool?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To access the HubSpot persona tool, open <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hubspot.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.hubspot.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and click on <\/span><b>Resources -&gt; Ebooks, Guides, and More.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll be redirected to a new page, scroll down to <\/span><b>Make My Persona <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tool, and click on it (see the Figure below).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the new pages, click on <\/span><b>build my persona <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">button to begin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 1: Create Your Avatar<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To begin creating a user persona, we need to humanize it. Giving your buyer a name and face makes it easier to see them as a real person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How do I name my buyer?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add the first name of your buyer to their respective industry. For example, Marketing Vlad or Mary Sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That way it\u2019s easy to remember and categorize each persona as you move further. Also, your teammates won\u2019t confuse one persona with the other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve named my buyer persona \u2018Arya Software\u2019 as it\u2019s supposed to be a part of the software industry. Arya doesn\u2019t need to be a girl in particular as my product is gender-neutral. In case you\u2019re targeting a specific gender, edit that information in the final draft. We\u2019ll discuss editing further below.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 2: Demographic Traits\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traits set each user apart and mark each customer&#8217;s behavioral patterns. It\u2019s the second question that\u2019s asked in the HubSpot persona tool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age and educational background are important in a number of cases. For instance, if you\u2019re selling computer games, then there\u2019s a higher probability that 18-year-old Alex will buy it than 55-year-old Jane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former was just an example but some products and services are designed specifically for a particular age group. There\u2019s also the issue of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.gov.uk\/info\/20108\/trading_standards\/355\/underage_sales_restrictions\/3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">age restrictions for particular products or services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cigarettes and alcohol are among products that cannot be sold to an underage (18 or below) individual.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educational background also gives you insight into your customer\u2019s goals and objectives. A person holding a Bachelor&#8217;s degree is likely to pursue further education. This information is especially helpful if you\u2019re advertising for an online course or learning platforms like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.udemy.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Udemy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coursera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of Arya, age and educational background are important because she\u2019s a software developer. Most organizations require software developers to hold at least an Associate degree. An associate degree holder is likely to be 18 years or above. A bachelor&#8217;s or Master&#8217;s degree holder is likely to be over 22 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 3: Business Industry\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The business industry of your potential buyer plays an important part in their persona development. A deeper knowledge of your buyer\u2019s industry offers insight into the problems they\u2019re facing. <\/span><b>Understanding your persona\u2019s problem is the first step to find a solution.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, the needs of small and large businesses are different. Two organizations in the same industry may have totally different problems. For example, an organization with less than 10 employees is less likely to need an employee management system compared to a large multi-international organization. Some products or solutions are designed for a particular industry or for either large or small organizations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For my project management software, I\u2019ll be targeting both small and large organizations. It&#8217;s designed specifically for a particular domain of technology, i.e., software development but both small and large organizations can benefit from it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 4: Career<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The job title of your buyer persona is important because there are two kinds of people who interact with a product or service (in any organization). The one who makes the purchase and the one who directly interacts with the product or service.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The job title of my buyer persona is an associate software developer. The developer may not be the buyer but (s)he is the one who will interact with it on a daily basis. The needs of this developer are addressed in both the design and marketing phases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, I\u2019ve established who they report to in order to target them in the marketing phase. Now, I\u2019ll create a separate buyer persona for their project managers and other individuals involved in the buying process.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 5: Characteristics of Your Buyer\u2019s Job\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To convince a buyer persona into purchasing your products or solution, you should be solving a problem they face. For that, you need to understand their objectives and daily challenges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My buyer persona, Arya, works in software development. As she interacts with tens of people from different departments every day, scheduling conflicts are common. Her day-to-day challenges include project management and communication issues and those are the problems that my project management software addresses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 6: How Do They Work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tools are an important part of every industry. Especially in the recent pandemic, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coronavirus_disease_2019\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, project management platforms like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trello<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and communication platforms like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zoom.us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have proved their importance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you know about the tools and technologies your buyer persona uses, you know three important things about them:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarities in your solution and their current solution<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How they operate on a daily basis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to position your marketing message<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of Arya, she uses multiple software on a daily basis like CRM, project management, email, etc. As project management software is part of it, I know that I\u2019m targeting the right audience. Also, she uses social media, text messages, and email daily and I can use those mediums to reach her.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 7: How Do They Operate?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information is critical at every step of your life but how you obtain that information changes over the years. This step is crucial as people from different age groups have different social and behavioral patterns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t expect a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/g\/generation-x-genx.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gen-X<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> user to scroll through social media feeds all day. As for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Millennials\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millenials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they prefer social media platforms and watching videos over reading books.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reaching out to your audience goes in vain if they don\u2019t take an interest in the message. This step gives us two important pieces of information:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where to reach your buyer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get your message through<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arya is a Gen-X user and product of the information age. She uses all social media platforms and prefers online learning platforms over traditional classrooms. As a software developer, she also spends most of her time around a computer screen. I used social media platforms and discussion forums like Quora to collect information about her. Also, I\u2019ll probably be using social media for marketing too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Done! It\u2019s also easy to share with your teammates and get feedback.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the Pros of Using the HubSpot Persona Tool?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, we\u2019ll discuss some strengths and weaknesses of the HubSpot tool. In general, tools and software make life easier but the HubSpot Persona tool helps us in more than one way.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-planned Questions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first issue with creating personas is planning the questionnaire.
